Category: Coffee Recipes

Coffee recipes on this site are written differently from most recipe content. The aim is not just to tell you what to do but to explain why each step matters, so that when something does not taste right you understand what to adjust rather than starting again from scratch.

A latte recipe that tells you to pull a shot and add steamed milk is technically accurate and almost entirely useless. A latte guide that explains what a well-extracted shot tastes like, why milk temperature affects texture, what the difference is between stretched and correctly microfoamed milk, and what happens to the flavour balance when the milk is too hot: that is something you can actually use.

What is covered here

Espresso-based drinks: the range from ristretto to lungo, from flat white to cappuccino to cortado, with notes on the ratios and techniques that distinguish them rather than just the names.

Cold coffee drinks: cold brew, Japanese iced coffee, cold drip, and the various iced espresso drinks that have become standard in specialty cafes. These are not interchangeable, and the differences matter for flavour.

Coffee cocktails: a smaller section covering coffee-based drinks that include alcohol. These are written for home bartenders who want to understand what the coffee is doing in the drink, not just how to assemble it.

Flavoured and seasonal drinks: coffee drinks that incorporate other flavours, from cardamom and cinnamon through to more unusual combinations. A poorly made spiced latte is worse than a well-made plain one.

A note on equipment

Most recipes in this section include notes on what equipment is needed and whether a simpler alternative produces a comparable result. A recipe that requires a expensive espresso machine is not useful to someone brewing on an AeroPress. Where a method can be adapted, the adaptation is explained.

Scaling and adapting recipes

Most recipes here are written for a single serving. Scaling up is not always as simple as multiplying the ingredients. Espresso-based drinks in particular require attention to extraction ratios when scaling, since the relationship between dose, yield, and brew time does not scale linearly. Notes on scaling are included where it matters. Equipment substitutions are flagged where a simpler method produces a comparable result.
