Category: Coffee Culture

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world and one of the most culturally specific. How coffee is made, served, and consumed varies enormously between countries and communities. Italian espresso culture, with its rituals around the bar and its deep suspicion of milk after eleven in the morning, is almost nothing like the filter coffee culture of Scandinavia, where coffee consumption per capita is among the highest in the world. Neither resembles the coffee ceremony traditions of Ethiopia, where coffee is prepared and served in a formalised social ritual that can last several hours.

Understanding these differences is not just interesting in itself. It explains why certain equipment became standard in certain markets, why certain flavour profiles are considered ideal in different countries, and why the global specialty coffee movement has developed the way it has.

The rise of specialty coffee over the past two decades changed the industry in ways that are still working themselves out. Direct trade relationships between roasters and producers, the emphasis on single-origin transparency, the professionalization of barista skills, and the elevation of coffee as a subject worthy of serious attention: all of these developments have shaped what is available to buy, how it is talked about, and what customers expect.

Not all coffee culture content here is about specialty coffee. The history of instant coffee, the economics of commodity coffee, the role of coffee in working-class British culture, the rise of the coffee shop as a place of work: these subjects matter too and are covered with the same interest as anything else.
