Category: Brewing Methods

Every brewing method produces a different cup from the same beans. This is not a matter of one method being better than another. It is a matter of understanding what each method does to the coffee and choosing accordingly. The same Ethiopian natural processed bean that produces an intensely fruity, wine-like cup in a French press may taste flat and thin in an espresso machine. Understanding why is the point of this section.

Brewing methods differ along several key dimensions. Immersion versus percolation: whether the coffee grounds sit in contact with water for the full extraction time, as in a French press or AeroPress, or whether water passes through the grounds continuously, as in pour-over or espresso. Pressure: whether extraction happens at atmospheric pressure or under significant force, which dramatically affects which compounds are extracted and in what proportion. Filtration: whether the brew passes through paper, metal, or cloth, which determines how much fine sediment and oil reaches the cup.

Pour-over guides cover the variables that affect extraction: grind size, water temperature, pour rate, total brew time, and the bloom. Each variable is explained in terms of what it does to the cup, not just what the correct setting is. Espresso guides cover both technique and troubleshooting. AeroPress covers the method’s flexibility and why it rewards experimentation.

French press, moka pot, cold brew, and siphon are covered with the same depth. No method is treated as a lesser option. Articles in this section are written to be genuinely useful at multiple levels. A beginner making their first pour-over and an experienced home barista refining their espresso technique should both find something worth reading here.
